In various folk medicine practices, walnut tree leaves are used to treat respiratory problems such as coughs and asthma, constipation and urinary stones. The rind of the walnut itself is said to be effective in treating anaemia and diarrhoea. Used externally, walnut oil can treat a variety of skin conditions including acne, eczema, sunburn, inflammation, and ulcers. The oil can also be used to treat itching scalp, peeling, and dandruff.
Walnut oil also has culinary uses; its delicate flavour and scent make it an efficient oil to use in pan frying (although, not as regularly – heating can remove some of the oil’s flavour, and produce a slight bitterness). However, the oil is a popular ingredient in many food dishes and products.
