Marjoram can often be confused with other species, notably Spanish Marjoram (Thymus mastichina
), Oregano (Origanum vulgare
) and Pot Marjoram (Orgiganum onites
). Hence it is often referred to as 'Sweet Marjoram' to distinguish it from these other species.
In Aromatherapy, Marjoram is regarded as having a warming, antispasmodic activity making it useful for digestive, respiratory and menstrual issues. This action also lends itself extremely well to muscular and rheumatic aches and pains. It is also considered to have mild relaxing and sedative properties and so may be useful for stress-related conditions, sleep problems, headaches and nervousness.
