Sandalwood is one of the most ancient and precious essential oils. It is an integral part of Brahmin, Buddhist and other religious rituals.
Today it is used extensively in perfumery for its tenacious base note that acts as a fixative and is able to blends and harmonise well with other oils.
Sandalwood oil is reported to have a diuretic effect and has demonstrated urinary anti-septic properties. In clinical trials alpha-santalol and beta-santalol have also demonstrated a sedative effect.
Topically, Sandalwood oil has soothing, moisturising and cooling properties. It may be a useful addition to formulations for dry and inflammed skin conditions as well as those for oily and acne-prone skin.
