We did not see any sign of overheating. After the cure, the soap had a tan shade, and the scent was mild. Initially, we thought this would just be slow to come to a light trace but then we started to see the little pieces of “rice” form in the batter and it had the appearance of soupy rice. We continued blending until the soap batter smoothed out which was when it reached a medium-thick trace. The batter was still loose enough to get into the mold easily. After 24 hours, the scent was strong and had a more dominant tuberose character but kept the sweet gardenia notes. There was no discoloration but we did observe the soap had almost reached a full gel with no signs of overheating. The water and oils came to an emulsion quickly and turned bright yellow. At this point, we could already see the effects of acceleration so we removed the stick blender. In the few seconds it took to wipe off the blades and set the stick blender safely out of the way, the soap became stiff. We dumped the soap into the mold and pressed down as much as we could. By the time we grabbed a piece of plastic wrap to cover the mold, the soap was already starting to gel. After 24 hours we observed that the soap reached a full gel and there was no discoloration. We could see the edges did not become uniform with the entire bar and looked like small pebbles, however, they did not break or fall off. After 30 days, the soap had discolored to a light tan shade and the scent was a little softer. This fragrance may perform better in a hot process soap application or other personal care products. The batter seemed to thicken quickly, but we could still see signs of separation. We continued doing quick pulses with the stick blender and alternating with hand stirring until our batter was a medium trace with no signs of separation. Despite the quick thickening, the batter was very workable and poured smoothly into the mold. After 24 hours, the soap was too soft to unmold. We checked almost every day to see if it was ready, and after six days it was firm enough to come out of the mold without tearing but was still quite sticky to the touch. We observed there was a small area that gelled in the center, and there was no discoloration. The scent was strong. After 30 days, there was no discoloration, and the scent remained strong. After 24 hours, the soap was much too soft to unmold; after 3 days, the soap was still soft but we were able to remove it from the mold cleanly. We observed the soap had nearly reached a full gel with signs of potential overheating in the center. The scent seemed mild and there was no discoloration. After 30 days, the scent is stronger and the bars discolored to a light tan. The batter came to an emulsion quickly but we had to stick blend and hand stir for a little over 5 minutes to reach a thin trace. The lye water and oils were a little cooler than our normal soaping temperature, which may have slowed trace. After 24 hours the soap was still very soft so we allowed the soap to stay in the mold for another 2 days. Once we removed the soap from the mold we noticed it was still very soft, and probably could have used an additional day in the mold to harden a little more. There was no discoloration and the scent had a pleasant herbal quality with the sage notes becoming slightly more dominant. We did not see any signs of the soap going into a gel phase. After 30 days the scent became more balanced and is pleasantly mild. There was no discoloration. Experienced cold process soap makers know that floral fragrances tend to accelerate or separate, so we proceeded with caution while testing this fragrance. Once the lye water was added to the fragranced oils, we alternated using a single pulse of the stick blender followed by gentle hand stirring until we reached an emulsion. At that point, the batter turned a bright yellow color and became too thick to stir. There was no sign of separation so we dumped the batter into the mold and pressed down as firmly as possible to minimize air pockets. As we scraped the batter into the mold we saw large chunks forming so we had concerns that the soap may not hold together in the mold. After 24 hours, the soap bars were holding together but the edges were rough and crumbly where it had not been pressed evenly into the mold. The soap had uneven discoloration with shades of yellow and brown, and what looked like flecks of gold throughout the bars. It was not clear if the soap reached a full gel due to the uneven colors. The scent was strong and beautiful. After 30 days, the soap had discolored to a uniform brown color and the scent remained strong. This fragrance was very difficult to work with in a cold process application, and we recommend only very experienced soap makers try it in their cold process recipes.
