Yarrow's botanical name is derived from the legend of Greek hero Achilles, who is said to have used it to stop the bleeding in his soldiers' wounds. Yarrow was traditionally used in European folk medicine to improve digestion and reduce inflammation in the digestive tract. It was also applied to the skin to heal wounds and stop minor bleeding.

Yarrow is also known as a sedative to relieve anxiety or insomnia, and as a muscle relaxant to relieve stomach and menstrual cramps.
