Carbopol® Ultrez 21 Polymer is a hydrophobically modified crosslinked polyacrylate polymer designed to efficiently impart thickening, stabilizing, and suspending properties to a variety of personal care applications. The polymer incorporates patented technology, which allows it to quickly and easily selfwet – without any mixing required. (Please note that typical mixing/agitation is needed to make a final product).
Rapid wetting properties: The unique structure of the polymer allows for rapid wetting and improved swelling time without the need for agitation.
High thickening efficiency: provides high viscosity with short flow properties. This versatile product can be used when your formulations require viscosity and suspending properties. It performs effectively across a broad pH range, making it a versatile ingredient for many applications.
Improved electrolyte tolerance: Viscosity, clarity and stability are all maintained in the presence of electrolytes. It is ideally suited for use in formulations containing higher levels of oils, botanical ingredients, or humectants like Sodium PCA.
Excellent clarity in applications: Even at high polymer concentration, it maintains superior clarity. It can be used with confidence in systems where sparkling clarity is required.
Superior aesthetic performance: Eexhibits good clarity in gel formulations, along with providing a smooth, aesthetically pleasing gel quality. In creams and lotions, it helps to create emulsions with superior skin feel and less tack.
Provides optimal performance in a wide range of products, including:
Hair styling gels
Hand, body and face lotions
Hand sanitizer gels
Usage: 0.2 - 0.4% , added to water at low shear then adjust pH to 6 to thicken.
The viscosity of products with Carbopol Ultrez 21 polymer is moderately sensitive to ions. Increased levels of monovalent ions (like sodium) will result in a decrease in application viscosity. The effect can be minimized by the use of potassium salts or amine neutralizing agents. Di-and multivalent ions (like calcium and magnesium) will precipitate Carbopol polymers. Therefore, formulating with deionized (or at least soft) water is highly recommended. Due to its anionic nature, Carbopol Ultrez 21 polymer has limited compatibility with cationic formulating materials.
