Myrrh is an aromatic resin extracted from several Commiphora
species which are hardy desert shrubs native to North Africa. The resin has been used as a medicine and religious sacrament for thousands of years and is one of the oldest known aromatic substances. Myrrh essential oil is reported to have astringent, antimicrobial and wound healing properties and has long been recommended for the topical management of wounds, ulcers and haemorrhoids. These properties may also make it useful as a gargle for mouth, gum and throat conditions.
