Niaouli is obtained from Melaleuca quinquenervia, which is native to northern Australia and Papua New Guinea. It is very closely related to Cajeput (Melaleuca leucodrendron) and in fact the two oils are often confused. Niaouli oil is very gentle when used diluted on the skin or mucous membranes whereas Cajeput is a known irritant to these tissues so ensuring the correct species is supplied is crucial.
As it is considered is non-irritant and yet still has antimicrobial properties, Niaouli may be useful for the management of acne and other skin conditions. Niaouli is also traditionally recommended for respiratory complaints such as a stuffy nose or chest, and as such makes an excellent addition to chest rubs and inhalation blends.
