German Chamomile has a surprising blue colour due to the powerful anti-inflammatory compound chamazulene that is formed when the essential oil is distilled from the flowers (take care as the blue colour may stain clothes and bed linen). German Chamomile is a key oil for any red irritated or flaky skin including eczema, acne, psoriasis rashes and wounds, due to its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, healing and antiseptic properties. It is also very popular in skincare formulations to nurture dry and reactive skin, and is ideal in nappy rash creams or ointments.
The calming effects of German Chamomile work wonderfully in a massage oil applied to the abdomen for menstrual and digestive discomfort, cramps, colic or bloating. It has traditionally been used to support the female system during menstruation and menopause (the latin name Matricaria refers to mother or womb). It is also used for muscle and joint aches, neuralgia, and tension headaches especially associated with stress
The soothing qualities of German Chamomile also extend to the mind, ideal for nervous tension, irritability and restlessness. It helps calm the nerves and promote restful sleep, and is suggested for those with an ‘over-sensitive’ nature.
