Description

Lakes are organic pigments made by absorbing a dye onto a substrate such as Alumina hydrate or Barium sulphate. They are dispersible (but not soluble) in both water and oil. Lakes will give a matte colour but are much more vibrant than oxides.

Lake definitions

D&C

The term D&C means that a lake is approved by the FDA for use in drugs and cosmetics.

Number

The number, e.g. Blue #1, refers to which dye has been used to make the lake.

Substrate

Lakes will have a mineral in their name, e.g. Barium, this is the substrate onto which the dye has been absorbed

Dye Percentage

Each substrate can absorb a varying amount of each dye. The dye percentage simply tells us how much pure colour is in the lake.

Great colour

This product goes the way and is a great ingredient to have as an alternative to ultramarines for whatever reason you may have.

I use this pigment to refine the colour of the stain in a tanning solution that I have made. Happy that there is a suitable replacement to ultramarine to suit the formula.

Can be a bit hit and miss

Sometimes this colourant goes a bit green. I ended up having to add extra green and changing the colour on my batch at the last minute
